Building Resilience: A Personal Journey through Setbacks

Resilience or grit - the inner power that drives performance in the face of adversity

Life is a journey filled with unexpected twists, challenges, and setbacks. I’ve traversed my share of winding paths, encountering obstacles that tested my perseverance and ability to bounce back stronger. From a career-changing car accident to multiple sports injuries leaving physical challenges and the harsh blows of startup failures and unemployment, these experiences have been my crucible for building resilience.

I define resilience or grit, as the inner power to persist in the face of adverse external forces. Angela Duckworth in her book “Grit” argues that grit is the hallmark of high achievers in every domain. Based on scientific research she explains how we can develop that inner power. I gained some great insights from her book and highly recommend reading it.

Embracing Setbacks as Catalysts for Resilience

Based on 40 years of personal experience and learning, here are what I believe to be the fundamental components necessary to increase your resilience.

  1. Optimism – The Anchor of Hope:

– Cultivate a mindset of optimism. In every setback, find the silver lining and hope that brighter days lie ahead.

– Practice mindfulness to create space between your thoughts and external events. This clarity is vital for rational decision-making in challenging situations.

– Identify and leverage your strengths. Building resilience involves understanding your capabilities and utilising them strategically.

– Reach out for support and surround yourself with a network of accountability. Shared burdens are lighter, and collective wisdom enhances problem-solving.

– Acknowledge and express gratitude for what you have. Gratitude fosters a positive mindset, especially in times of adversity.

– Celebrate small victories. Recognise and applaud your progress as these moments fuel your resilience journey.

– Cultivate composure. Maintain your perspective on reality during times of stress. Stepping back allows for a clearer understanding of the situation.


Resilience as a Skill to Cultivate


Whilst resilience is an innate trait we all have,  it needs to be nurtured and strengthened through intentional effort. My journey from shattered dreams to rising above setbacks has taught me that resilience is a muscle that strengthens with every challenge. By embracing optimism, self-belief, purpose, and the other key factors, you, too, can build resilience as a formidable asset in your life’s journey.


Remember, setbacks are an intrinsic part of a transformative journey toward greater strength and resilience.
