What’s Holding You Back from Fulfilling Your Leadership Potential?
I recently came across a powerful piece of wisdom shared by James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, that struck a chord:
“Things that keep talented people from fulfilling their potential:
• Trying to please everyone
• Imitating the desires of others
• Chasing status without questioning why
• Playing superhero and trying to do it all alone
• Dividing attention between too many projects
Which one is most likely to pull you in?”
It’s a brilliant distillation of the common traps that smart, ambitious people fall into — often without realising it. We’re all capable of more, but our potential is frequently diluted by distraction, misalignment, and the quiet pull of insecurity.
People Pleaser.
For me, trying to please everyone was the thing I struggled with early in my leadership career. As a business leader, coach, and someone who naturally values harmonious relationships, I had to work hard to develop the boundaries and clarity needed to stay true to my own goals. The instinct to be agreeable and keep everyone happy may seem noble, but over time, it can lead to over-commitment, blurred priorities, and missed opportunities. I’ve learned (and am still learning) that you can’t do your best work—or lead effectively—when you’re constantly diluting your energy trying to meet everyone else’s expectations.
In my work as a coach, I meet founders, entrepreneurs, and senior leaders every day who feel the weight of similar challenges. Whether it’s chasing goals that aren’t really theirs, trying to be all things to all people, or simply spreading themselves too thin, they’re at risk of stalling out just when their potential is about to soar.
That’s where coaching can make all the difference.
It wasn’t until I started working with an executive coach that I realised that I could change my default behaviours to improve my effectiveness as a leader. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a quick fix, but over time, and with the challenge and support of my coach, I managed to reset my beliefs around harmony and effective relationships. With much practice, I slowly adjusted my communication to become more direct, open, and explicit enabling me to state clearly and honestly what my expectations and requirements were. I soon discovered that the people around me liked and responded better to clear direction.
